Children's Centres

What you might expect from a SureStart Children's Centre:

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is developing Children’s Centres in line with the Government’s agenda to deliver childcare and education in an integrated way. The Children's Centre Programme is designed to give all children an equal start in life by providing access to, or signposting to, a mix of health, early education, employment,  training information and family services within the local community.

The development of Children’s Centres is based on need and the importance of parents and carers having choice about the type of childcare they select and the services and facilities being available locally.  Within the Southend-on-Sea Borough Children’s Centres are operational at :

The Government plans for every community to have a Children’s Centre with the understanding that these do not duplicate established services, but work to build upon existing good practice.

Services and Facilities:

Children’s Centres are based upon plans that have been submitted to Government and the Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's plans have been approved by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.  This means that each location is required to provide six areas of work, either on site or within the ward:

  • Early Years Childcare and Education
  • Family Support and Parental Outreach
  • Child Health and Ante-natal Care
  • Job Centreplus
  • Special Educational Needs
  • Childminder Network
These areas are sub-divided into specific services or facilities that will be available for children and their families within the Children’s Centre Wards.
